Self publishing just got a whole lot easier and yet with a far greater potential with the advent of the intenet. There are several different forms of digital publishing. For example, ebooks, ezine articles, blogs and websites themselves. You can also upload your work and have it printed as a hard copy book. (also as leaflets, cards, posters or whatever.)
Lets look at each one of these in turn.
ebooks
'ebook' is short for 'electronic book' and they come in many guises. ebooks have many advantages over hard copy books.
Like a regular magazine, an 'ezine' (electronic magazine) is a periodical and comes as a series of editions. Ezine sites manage publication and accept articles.
Blogs or 'weblogs' started off as a kind of journalists online diary. The advantages were that they could keep it up to date online from anywhere in the field and it was instantly available and could be easily shared. They quickly caught on as everyone else realised the advantages. Blog sites usually display blogs as a long scrolling list in date order.
Website publishing hardly needs any introduction. You don't have to learn html as there are now ways to create whole websites easily with templates and formatting tools.
Publishing hard copy books has also been massively affected by the digital revolution. Not only can you use computer software to create the page files (as in 'desk top publishing'), but the whole printing process has benefited by the technology as well as the whole worldwide distribution system.
